| Florence
is the regional capital of Tuscany. Florence Municipality extends
to about 100 sqkm with 350.000 inhabitants. The Florence metropolitan
area, with approx. 1.000.000 inhabitants, includes 50 different
municipalities.
The specific feature of this city is the connection between one
of the most important cultural heritages of the world and tertiary
activities. In the recent past Florence was also a place of industrial
activities, now mostly dislocated in the rest of the Region.
Sustainability is one of the major goals in the urban governance
of the town which is now ruled by a metropolitan area Master Plan
approved in 1990. This goal is mainly supported by recovering
dismissed areas and brownfields (former factories, barracks, railway
premises etc).
