Valenciennes Métropole

Valenciennes is situated in the Region Nord Pas de Calais and the Département Nord, near Lille’s agglomeration. The city is situated in the center of the ancient mining area of France. Its area is 1380 ha. In the particular French situation, there are two levels of administration: the "commune" (municipality) of Valenciennes with 42.343 inhabitants and the "Communauté d’agglomération" (Agglomeration Community) with 360.000 inhabitants. The Municipality of Valencienne is pursuing the ambitious urban policy for already more then ten years, implementation of which led to resolution of some problems, like reduction of the unemployment rate, but there is sill an imbalance between the city and the agglomeration.
