Bratislava is the capital of the Slovak Republic since 1993. It spreads out over both banks of the Danube river and on the foothills of the Small Carpathians. It is divided in 17 municipalities and the Local Council of Bratislava is the main self-governing body. It consists of 80 councillors.In 1999, 448 292 residents dwelt in Bratislava. The increase from latest census summary in 1991 is represented by 6 095 citizens (1,4%). The decrease of population number during the 1999 was calculated to 1 255 citizens, it means 0,3% from the whole population number. The share of Bratislava inhabitants in overall Slovak population number has decreased to 8,3%. The process of development of population number has turned in 1996, from this year we are witnessing decrease process of population number in Bratislava. The decrease of population number within the years 1996-1999 was reported up to 3996 persons.
