A group of 12 Reference Cities, with experience in dealing with distressed areas and regeneration processes, was established in order to create a broader level of comparison and encourage the interactive exchange of experiences. The Reference Cities contribute towards the collection of examples. The empirical research undertaken within the participating cities, along with LUDA project dissemination and networking activities, will contribute to the creation of a pan-European network of practitioners and researchers. This network will address the complex problems of urban distressed areas and look to fill knowledge gaps in terms of large urban distressed areas.

The representatives of Reference Cities participated in the public conference in Salzburg on the December 3, 2004. The experience exchange between Reference Cities and city partners was initiated through the panel discussions and working groups.

LUDA is a research project of Key Action 4 "City of Tomorrow & Cultural Heritage" of the programme "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development" within the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission.
